Save this creature's life and don't buy one

Comments I know that title might sound like a bit much, but of the large anemone available in the aquarium trade the Ritteri is arguably the most difficult to keep. Water, lighting (super bright), current (lots of total water volume movement), feeding (will eat your fish), and positioning (move around and even drift), must all be perfect and that's simply a very hard thing for most aquarists, even experienced ones, to accomplish. Sometimes it's not about your tank, or how much experience you have, but rather the needs of the animal are just so great. When I first got into the hobby I wanted to buy one of these, I called all of our local fish shops looking for one and shop after shop told me they didn't stock them because they were too difficult to care for and seldom did well even in the store. I finally found one shop that had one in a show tank with some clowns. They did sell them, but once they explained the care they took in their show tank, and the fact they suggested a large (more than 200 gallons) tank, I decided not to buy one. It just didn't seem fair to the animal and since they are not known to quickly reproduce we shouldn't be pulling them off the reef.

Also...they move a lot, can balloon up and float away, and will eat aquarium fish they aren't hosted with.

After years of keeping aquariums of various kinds I finally felt I was ready to try one. Even with conditions correct, it didn't survive more than six months. This is a species that, on the reef, is considered ageless, older than trees, so six months was a heart breaker. I keep a heteractis crispa, also known as a sebae or leathery anemone and my two clowns have hosted with it just fine.

Liked about it 1. Very attractive and very, very large!
2. Can serve as a host for several clown fish species and will grow large enough for more than just two clowns to host with it.

Didn't like 1. It will die after a short time in your tank.
2. It will kill other things in your tank.

Beautiful Species

Comments The Ritteri Anemone is also referred to as the Magnificent Anemone, or Heteractis Magnificent Sea Anemone(H. magnifica). This is an extremely beautiful anemone who's beauty is equally matched with its demanding care requirements. This anemone should only be kept by experienced hobbyists that have researched its care needs and are willing to provide the strong lighting, current requirements, and pristine water conditins that this species needs to not only survive but thrive. This anemone is prone to wander much like the bubble tip anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) and thus can be prone to knocking over corals and live rock. It also carries a very powerful sting that can harm corals and other tank inhabitants. The presence of a Clownfish, such as Amphiprion ocellaris, Amphiprion percula, or Amphiprion perideraion, will have been known to help the anemone acclimate eaiser.

Liked about it Extremely beautiful anemone

Didn't like Extremely difficult to care for, even more so to the inexperienced hobbyist new to keeping anemones.
