Lettuce Nudibranch

The lettuce nudibranch is a beautiful shell-less snail. It's colors can range from green to blue. Some specimens have red, orange, brown or yellow trim on it's folds and often appears to be spotted. - The lettuce nudibranch is an algae eater, but contrary to popular opinion will not eat hair algae. They will, however, happily consume Bryopsis. As a matter of fact, some sources indicate that the only algae they will eat is Bryopsis, leading to a very real possibility of starvation. As the nudibranch eats this algae, it will incorporate the chloroplasts into it's own skin and become photosynthetic. - Another major concern with these creatures is getting sucked into overflows and powerheads. They are very fragile, all powerhead and overflow intakes should be covered with a fine mesh to prevent this.

Nice little addition when you see them, also

Comments These little guys are quite a interesting addition to the reef tank, but are not the most "out front" animal. I see my Lettuce Nudibranch's every once in a while.Just when I thought they had disappeared forever to my amazement they show themselves if only for a short while.
When first purchased one of them was sucked into the overflow only minutes after adding them to my tank. It was pulled into the sump chamber directed towards the pump and chopped into three pieces when discharged. The head of the animal, only a small piece with one little ruffle left somehow survived and regenerated into a full size animal over the course of a few months.

Liked about it Interesting to watch
Easy to care for
Nice color addition to tank

Didn't like Easily sucked into pumps
elusive, rarely seen

Lettuce Nudibranch - where are they?

Comments I got these Lettuce Nudibranchs when I first setup my tank. I always wanted one as they seemed very interesting to watch. So I purchased 3 of them and never saw them again. I acclinated properly but they are so small that unless you have a Nano tank, it is not worth it. These are active and move relativley quickly for a shell-less snail. The coloration is more vivid than the brown you see in your yard and eat what ever you have in the tank.

Liked about it Not very expensive, easy to keep (if you can find them) and colorful.

Didn't like Too small to keep in a larger aquarium, unless your trying for biodiversity. If I wanted to see them all I had todo was look in the filter. They kept on moving over the uptake and getting drawn into the Rena XP2 canister filter and lived among the media. I think a nice legless coral would have been a better purchase.
