Easy to use phosphate and silicate removal: PhosGuard
Comments
A good value, the beads are best used in smaller quantities and changed frequently (i.e., with water change). Use of PhosGuard will absorb high phosphates and then silicates to decrease diatom bloom, hair algae and improve coral growth. Place beads in a small mesh bag in a high flow sump area. Important: rinse beads before use because unrinsed beads can harm corals. (Rinsing will generate a small amount of heat.) The absorbed phosphate will not leach back into the water.

Liked about it
(1) Easy to use: bag it, rinse it, and place in high flow volume part of sump.
(2) Cleans up the diatom bloom and other high phosphate and silicate problems.
(3) Stores easily until needed.

(1) Some discussion about aluminum oxide used for better phosphate absorption and whether it can release aluminum to hard corals. Seachem documents with a study that no leaching occurs at pH around 8.0. However if the pH is low and the PhosGuard dose is higher than recommended, some aluminum can be released.
(2) Not for use in phosphate buffered freshwater
(3) Decide whether to use small amount and judge the water quality visually or use a phosphate kit to measure results.

Used for years, I Like It
Comments
Yes It performs quite well. This is the 2nd product in its class I've tried in over 15 yrs.
My new tank had a measurable level (.2 - .5) In 24 hrs, it was gone and remained that way till I replaced the
media when my carbon smelled foul. Never had a leaching issue as I never push the limits of
when to replace it.
Instructions say to use it 4 days, test, keep in place till desired reading is reached, test bi-weekly, and when reading is reached, REMOVE IT, DRY IT, REUSE IT. I just change mine with the carbon without all the fuss. But nice to know it's reusable making it more cost effective.
Coral never bothered by it, as I rinse well prior to use.
Is not an exchange resin and does not leach back phosphates or silicates into the system.

Didn't work for me
Comments
Since day 1 my tank has had measurable amounts of po4. Even though I use RO/DI water, I cannot seem to get rid of the po4 levels. I decided to try this product. I followed the dosing instructions, rinsed it extremely well and put it in direct water flow. The only thing I noticed was that my coral all started to shrivel up. Especially my zoa's. I tried more than once but always got the same results.

PO4 = ZERO
General
Bought this during a Phosphate issue early with my Marine tank (2 months old). Using this I was able to get my Phosphates down to undetectable levels in just two weeks. Algae terminated! Diatoms vanished! Nice product, still have half the bottle 5 months later... |
