Bacterial filtration is all about surface area, the making of mini bio balls, seems to defeat that purpose. While I understand this means they can fit into a smaller space, allowing nano tanks to have wet/dry trickle filtration, I am skeptical that they would have enough surface area.
Normal sized bio balls have a tendency to clog up and need periodic cleaning. Bio balls used in a higher flow can sometimes avoid this, but how do mini bio balls not clog up?
Because I was curious about the above questions I purchased a box of these and used them in my 5.5 gallon nano tank. I noticed no difference after six months in the water parameters before and after. As suspected they did require frequent rinsing to remove detritus.
There is a debate among aquarist about bio balls in general with some for and some against. What I have determined with this experience and over the years, is (good or bad aside) that in a reef tank, they simply aren't necessary. Save your money.

| Liked about it |
1. Fit into a very small space
2. Looked cool. I know that sounds silly but people couldn't believe I had a tiny web/dry trickle filter
|
| Didn't like |
1. Clogged up too easily
2. Made no difference in the water clarity or parameters
3. Just not necessary so why spend the money?

Useless

Bioballs as most people will say are not the greatest choice of filtration. Especially in a nano tank. They work decently for a few weeks but if left untouched after that without cleaning they become a nitrate factory.

They work well when maintained and trap any floating particles well and they are also a great way to oxygenate the water.

if left uncleaned they become a nitrate factory and it gets to the point you have to take them out. They're high maintenance and i would suggest to steer clear of bioballs.
