In my opinion I have never seen a difference from brand to brad with the exception of the pelleted versions.
carbon is carbon! Get whats the best bang for your buck. I have been using carbon 24/7 since day one and I used a lot. I actually went to bulk carbon since I use so much and buy it buy the bucket now.
carbon is great for many thing. I keep a mixed reef with Leathers and SPS corals Carbon is essential for keeping chemical warfare under control. It's great for water clarity. If you develop and yellowness or a green tint to you tank just add some carbon. Usage is also very versatile. you can simply place it in a filter bag and drop it in your sump or run it in a reactor. I use a reactor because it much more efficient.

Great for water clarification. Use this if you gave yellow, green or even cloudy water
Absorbs many chemicals. Even those emitted by corals.
Cheat and easy to use.
