Pacific Island Deepwater Live Rock

Live rock to serve as a biological filter while adding an interesting "pinecone" shape and texture to the aquascape.

I like this rock, but wouldn't do my whole tank in it
| Comments |
I have several pieces of Tonga rock (that's what I have always heard this called) that I purchased pre-cured at my local fish store. It's quite porous and light so provides good housing for bacteria and so helps with filtering.
For the most part I really like this rock. I have one large piece that is slightly long and arched and serves as a bridge in my tank. Because of the unique shape of the rock (not actually a true rock by the way) the pieces fit together like a jig saw puzzle and can be fitted into very stable designs. I like that a lot.
One thing I don't like is that it is difficult to fix corals to the rock. Zoanthus that grow on it go in and out of the various parts of the rock and don't create a satisfying mat. Because of this I don't use Tonga in the pats of my tank that will have corals directly on the rock.
This is the only kind of rock I have in my refugium. I really love it for that purpose. I have limited space in my refugium but really wanted to maximize the housing for infauna and bacteria. All the crags and protuberances on this rock make the perfect housing for amphipods and mysis. You can fill the space in your refugium but still leave enough gaps and spaces for things to live.

Pacific Island Deepwater Live Rock
| Comments |
Pacific Island Deepwater Live Rock (also called Tonga Deepwater) is supposed to be recovered from breakage after storms and be covered with biological filtering algae (i.e., coralline). I didn't see much filtering algae on it at all. The price is over $6.50/lb but it does include shipping and the rock is light and porous so 1 1/2 lb/gal is needed (in contrast to popular Fuji's 2 lb/gal). The shape was also a surprise; Tonga I had seen has always been a branching shape. These pieces were oval and had a "pinecone" texture. Pre-cured, it arrived wrapped in moist paper shipped promptly in a cooler; subsequently it neded to be either cured before adding to an existing tank or cycled in a new tank. I put it in a new tank and it is cycling quickly, a good sign that it was shipped in good health. I've seen no "hitchhikers" (pests like mantis shrimp that can come with live rock).

Pacific Island Deepwater live rock has an interesting "pinecone" shape and richer tan color to accent an aquascape. It is porous and light and will be an effective biological filter to maintain tank stability. The rocks came in a variety of shapes that worked for holes, arches, and overhangs in the aquascape.

Purchasing live rock on-line is a crap shoot. I prefer to see the live rock before purchasing to select pieces that appeal to me and work best in my tank. The out-of-pocket cost is high but this is not as bad when the benefits of a stable tank maintained with live rock biological filtering are added in. The website advertised a variety of shapes but sent only the one "pinecone" live rock.
