An aggressive coral that needs plenty of space
| Comments |
This coral is commonly called the Colt Leather, (sometimes Young's leather), or the Cauliflower Leather. It's not a difficult coral to keep alive, but it does need room to grow and room between it and other corals as it can be quite aggressive.
It contains Zooxanthellae and though you can give it supplemental food I have never had to do so. Because it is Zooxanthellate it does require medium to bright light to keep it alive.
It does best in strong (but not direct) flow. I have found it doesn't do well in higher temperatures. I would keep it between 77-79 degrees myself because at 80-82 it seems to "wilt".
This is a very easy species to propagate which is done by simply sniping off an arm which will then grow into a new colony.

1. Easy to care for. Small clown goby species of fish will find a home in this coral if you have no acropora for them.
2. Easy to frag and share.

I think that this is the ever-popular xenia

Easy to care for given the correct lighting, current, supplements and plankton supplements. Not aggressive, but it can be invasive. IT grows fairly quickly can can double in size in 1-3 months. I have not had any problems with my inverts trying to make a meal out of it. Tank size is not important. It should be placed in the open, it can climb up a rock wall and potentially get into places where you would not like it to be.

Fast growing, will pulse in the current which is very interesting to watch, cheap and easy to find.

Can detach from the plug or rock it is connected to and move to another place. The coral will only pulse given the correct temperature and water quality. Can grow and spread too quickly where you will have to prune it back.
