One of my favorite soft corals, nice movement and easy to keep featured

Comments The description of this coral under the name "Anthellia Polyp" uses the common name "Star Polyps" which is actually not a name I've heard attached to these corals. Be that as it may, there are several corals with the common name Green Star Polyp, or Star Polyp, or Starburst polyp that it's important to know if you are talking about Pachyclavularia, Clavularia, Briareum, or Anthellia. The title states this review is for Anthellia, so that's what I will discuss here.

There's only one reason I don't recommend this coral for beginners, and that is because it grows too much, too fast. A beginner will be pleased with this growth at first, feeling they've been very successful with their coral only to become frustrated later as it takes over large areas of the tank. It can give an aquarist the feeling they are loosing a battle. A beginner might not know how to frag, or how to use allopathic warfare to their advantage.

This coral isn't picky about where you put it, though I have found mine seem to like mottled lighting. They also don't really mind low flow, or high flow. I like them in a medium wave action, they have nice movement that is pleasing to the eye.

I have never had to target feed this coral. They will grab bits of flake, brine shrimp, or other food I put in for the fish.

I've seen some prices on this coral that are outrageous. I've personally never had to actually pay for this coral. People are happy to give you some for free. They know they can remove several polyps for you and they will grow back in no time at all.

This is a coral that you generally either love it or you hate it. I love it and am glad to have a healthy colony in each tank.

Liked about it 1. Grows very fast.
2. Is not picky about lighting, placement, or flow.
3. Hardy coral that will close up when water is bad but not die.

Didn't like 1. Usually seems to loose when it comes up against more aggressive corals that poison or sting.

love it, but be careful

Comments This is an easy to care for coral but acclimate slowly. it's Non aggressive but intrusive. it won't sting other corals but will encroach and possibly choke out other corals. Antherlia is the fastest growing coral i have seen yet. whether it's blue star or plain jane it grows fast once established. This is where causion it to be excercised. the blue polyped anthelia has less movement than the longer polyped type.

Liked about it i love the motion that the longer polyped type has, i love the vibrant blue that the shotr polyped type has, i love that it's real easy to frag. I just place rocks at its base and when the growth climbs onto it i cut it and put it in my frag tank.

Didn't like how selective it is. even though it's hardy it has to establish itself. i could never keep it in my 30g but no trouble in my 55g

Fast grower...

Comments Anthellia can be a tricky coral too keep, but after it sets in, look out... it'll grow like fire! It's a decent looking coral that resembles Xenia without the pulsing heads. It likes lots of flow and does well even in higher nutrient tanks. Non-reef folks (friends and relatives) love the swaying movement and think it's one of the coolest corals in the tank.

You should exercise caution though when adding it to a tank. It's best if kept isolated as it will spread quickly and can smother other corals.

Liked about it Lots of movement in higher flow tanks, grows quickly.

Didn't like Can smother other corals, will take over a tank if not properly tended.

A great beginer coral but beware....

General I have always had some of these corals in my tank whether I wanted them or not. They are a great beginner coral and near impossible to kill. Be sure to isolate them from the rest of your rock or they will take over your tank.

Liked about it Fast growing
Great look as they sway in your tank.
Very easy to keep.

Didn't like They spread like wild fire.
They are very aggressive and will completely cover other corals.
Not the greatest color.

GSP- The grass of the sea

General Very easy to keep coral. A little shy to open up when first put into tank. Encrusting mat grows quickly. Love to watch the waves it makes just like an open field. Love motion and something to look at. This is it for sure. Great beginner coral. Easy to multiply- place it touching another rock.

Liked about it Beautiful flowing motion.
Hardy.
