The Favites Corals are large polyp stony (LPS) corals often referred to as Moon, Pineapple, Brain, Closed Brain, Star, Worm, or Honeycomb Coral. This coral has bright coloration which attracts many hobbiests to it.

Get this before you get Acans

Favia is what I consider a good beginner LPS coral. If you have been able to keep your basic soft corals alive for 8 months to a year there's a good chance you will be able to keep favia alive as well. I have a red and a greed colony that are simply beautiful. They feed readily but I find they are able to grab enough out of the water column so I don't target feed my favia. This has not impeded their growth at all and each colony has doubled in size since I purchased them. With target feeding I can only imagine how fast they would grow.
Both of my colonies sit on the sand in an area of indirect flow. I would say the flow is higher than moderate but not quite what I would call high. The powerhead shouldn't be directly pointed at them in my opinion.
Favia is a lot less tempermental about lighting and positioning than other LPS and don't cost nearly as much as acans. It's also a very attractive coral. My green colony is very bright and my red colony is deeply red.
I would say if you are thinking about getting LPS this is a good place to start.

3. lower light requirements than some LPS.
4. Very inviting shape and colors.

1. Because these always seem to do better on the sand they do take up room which can be annoying. Also if you have a pistol shrimp like I do you might find sand on your favia if you place it too close to the burrow.

Neat coral
| Comments |
Favia require moderate light with a medium flow. They are relitivly easy to care for and are kept in best health when they are target fed mysis or brine shrimp. This coral is agressive and has long sweeper tenticles that come out at night to search for food. These sweeper tenticles can sting other corals so it is best to keep Favia away from other corals. The color on Favia is varied and there are many different color combinations that are stunning. I find this coral does best on a sand bottom.
