Maiden's Hair
|
Chlorodesmis is a green filamentous algae whose appearance is similar to thin blades of grass or tufts of hair. Its common names include Maiden's Hair Plant and Turtle Grass. It contains a toxic substance which deters herbivorous fish from eating it. It is a beautiful bright green plant that will bring a diversity of color and form to your marine refugium. -
Provide the Maiden's Hair plant with a moderate to strong water current and lighting. These plants are a wonderfull breeding ground for beneficial crustaceans like amphipods and copepods. This species is sensitive to high levels of nitrates and any detectable levels of copper. -

Grass Full of Surprises!
| Comments |
You don't actually take care of it, as long as you give it good lighting, a healthy water flow and good water parameter it'll grow healthy. It's fairly agressive, knowing that it contains a certain toxin to repell herbivours. The grass grows quite slow when the nitrogen cycle is efficient enough that no unwanted algae grows in the tank but, it'll be fine.

It's been the home for my emerald crab ever since I got one for my refugium. Every now and then amphipods swim out in swarms and copepods do apear out of no where, Maiden's hair offer shelter to these tiny creatures. I even got my first zoanthids from it! They do look good in refugiums too! Got my maiden's hair out of the local reef that's why.

They're not that moveable, once they've anchored themselves they're staying there!

Alright algae

Have a patch of this growing on a rock in my 10g. I don't know if I particularly like it. It's REALLY hard to remove as it's pretty stiff and keeps a good grip on the rock it's on. It's a nice green color and is more appealing than that nasty GHA.

Doesn't really spread very much from it's spot. Grows pretty fast and exports nutrients.

Biggest thing I don't like is that it's very hard to prune or remove. It's got pretty stiff blades.

Thoughts on Maiden's Hair
| Comments |
I purchase this algae from a Lfs(local fish store) for $10.00(usd), at the size of 3 inches. Over a 2-4 month time period it grow additional 2 inches. Possible could have grown faster if I had more lighting(i have 20 t all tank w/ 2x54w t5's). I have seen amphipods in this from time to time. My Magnificence Fox Face has picked at it a couple of times. I have had emeralds eat it including a Gulf of Mexico hermit. Its not a fast grower so no a nitrate of phosphate removing power house.

Additional color to my tank and also another form of lowering my phosphates and nitrates.

Not a very fast grower...which is ok. But other that no complaints. Its just additional green color in my reef.
